Keep in mind that there are people who measure the 'Hotness' of an article/discussion by the number of comments on it. In the extreme end there are people who check the number of comments before reading the article (Specially the people that spend lots of time in forum discussions). Also the "number of comments" text is the link for reading/adding comments. I have seen some themes where its almost impossible to find the 'comments' link even when I want to add a comment to it.
