Using Adsense in your blog ? Have a decent traffic but no clicks at all ? Then most probably your doing the same mistake as I did , displayed image ads in your Adsense unit. Although they may look cool, after using Adsense for more than a year I found out they are the most lowest performing types of ads. I had this nice Adsense unit above the content where I got a decent amount of clicks and when a image ad appeared on it I thought , that looks cool , readers are likely to click a nice flashy image. I found out different in a few days.
The average internet user is fed up of ads and are very unlikely to click any ads on your blog. Ones that are going to click them are the ones who are relatively new and who wants more information about the stuff you blog about. If you have a text ad running at that moment not only it gives more option to the reader to click if you have set up your Adsense unit right they look just like any other content in the blog. So the advantages of using text ads can be summarized like this.
- Even a reader very new to the internet can identify a image ad. But if you put some effort into your ad design you can make the text ad look just part of your blog.
- Image ad gives only one option and it might not be related to what the user wants, text ads gives you more options ( at least two ) so the chances of something relevant to the reader showing up are increased 50%.
So next time you start designing that Adsense don't go for the default text and image ads option but , select the text only ads option. That second you spend on selecting the correct ad unit can go a long way in improving your click rates.
What do you think about image ads ? Do they perform well in your blog ?

Thank you for this useful tip , I never thought of this before.
I always thought image ads are cool , because they add a bit more color to the site , did some searching and what you make is a valid point. Thanks
