Protect Your Content using a RSS signature

Posted 9th May 2008 | View Comments

If you are using RSS and especially if you are providing a full feed RSS like me chances are others might be publishing without content without your consent and most importantly without any reference to the original blog post. This could lead to your blog being penalized by Google for duplicate content and more importantly you could be missing out on lots of potential readers for your blog.Don't get me wrong , there are plenty of sites that read other blogs feeds , but they mostly provide only an excerpt of your post ( avoiding duplicate content penalty ) and they always points to the original post so if the user liked the excerpt he will visit the site to read the full thing so you get the exposure you want.

The thing is there are some out there who have no ethics and just read some feed reader and publish them as their own content. And some even have the nerve to drop you a Entrecard :( . I was reciprocating my drops and when I went to Web Wanker I found the recent article section very familiar.Familiar isn't the right word since the heading were exactly the same as mine :( , and after clicking through to read the articles I was even more surprised because the content was the exact same without the images I added to some posts. There was no contact form so I left a comment asking the blogger to remove the content but they are not removed up to now.Obviously I was upset about this so I did some Googling to find out a way to protect my content and came up with RSS signature Plug in.

Installing it is pretty simple and the plug in page provides instruction on how to do it. There are plenty of options like %FIRST% ( First Name ) , %LAST% ( Last Name ) , %URL% ( Website Name ) provided so you can customize the signature according to your need. The ease of use and installation makes it very appealing to non technical bloggers and like some plug ins you don't need to sign up for anything to download the plug in.If you are providing full feed RSS this is a great free way to protect your content being published without your consent. So what are you waiting for go secure your feed now ! :)

    Hi,
There are always morons like that. Just hit to root of the cause. Capture screens with dates, then capture your screens with dates, send both the copies to adsense and other advertisers. Also send to entercard and other links that he has on it. Once advertising drops he will drop too. The voipniche blog (Now has a pagerank 4!) was created because of voipniche.com was copying some of my sites like crazy. Now voipniche.com has become a parked site! It might not work all the time but I would give a try!

Thank you I will try that and see :)

Inform the hosting provider that the blogger is violating your IP rights with proof.

Also what you can do is to have lisence information attached with each of your posts. So any one that copy your content must follow your rules. You don’t have to go for legal actions if some one break the rules. If you just contact their host with evidence, most of the times you can get that site off the web.

Take a look at Creative Commons (http://creativecommons.org/)

My blog is not popular enough “yet” to use the Plug-in but it is worth checking into and have in my toolbox for later. On the plus side it
must be a morale-booster for you where someone takes your post to better
their blog. Still amazed where you come up with all this information in your posts!

    Rakitha,
    Thanks I will try that.

    Gord,
Well that’s one positive way of looking at it :)

  6. I think you’re always going to get scrapers and the like. I prefer not to waste my time and energy chasing them. I’ve just started using a similar plug-in on one of my blogs and I’m really happy with it. I use it to send private messages to my RSS subscribers and it has the added benefit of giving a link back if scrapers decide to copy my content.

umm, i was just reading his blog and most of his posts that u are saying he ’stole’ was written before yours? WTF!?

I must say I have never heard about this plugin. This could be a killer especially with the amount of my posts that get used for scrap/spam sites.

    Kate,
Yep , I also decided not to go chasing them, instead its better to get a link back :)

    Seo Blog,
Glad some one found it useful

    Greg,
What are you talking about ? I’ve given few examples to prove it.

The best thing you can do here is to link your recent posts with previous posts of your blog inside the blog post.
