How to look Good in any browser - 1

Posted 17th June 2008 | Comments

Are you a nice blogger who cares about your visitors ? If so you should worry about how your blog or website looks in different browsers. Your blog that looks beautiful in your Firefox browser might not look so good in Internet Explorer or Opera. You can achieve this in three easy steps and if you acheive all three steps you can you can win the icare gold award courtesy of Nice2all. Until I visited that site I didn't bother to to view my blog on IE and I was a bit surprised to find out that some widgets look ugly in IE.So please visit icare to read the full details.

The Steps

  1. Make you blogs main page valid XHTML. Don't let the technical words scare you, use this free tool to do the validation , http://validator.w3.org/ , if you pass this test you win the icare bronze award.
  2. Validate your style sheet , use this free tool ( http://jigsaw.w3.org/css-validator/ ) to do the validation , pass this step and you win the icare silver award.
  3. After passing the above two steps your blog will be put thorough a color contrasting test and fixed font size test , you can do the test yourself using this free tool. ( CSS Checker ) , pass this test and you win the icare gold award.

Strip Your Blog

Since you know the tools its up to you to proceed. First thing I did was remove all my widgets from the theme. Make sure to get a rough sketch of the layout before you remove your widgets. The purpose is to validate your theme first and then validate your widgets one by one so you don't have to validate all at once.

First step

Go to http://validator.w3.org/ and in the address field enter the url of your blog. If you pass this test without any problems you will get a result called "Passed Validation" and a badge to show off in your blog. And you can win the icare bronze award as well. In case you failed the test like I did click more options check the show source check box and press validate button again. Now you get the errors listed with a link to the line with the error.Check tomorrow's post for the most common errors and how to overcome them.

What do you think of this, is this a waste of time or a must have for all blogs , feel free to share your thoughts in the comment section. If you become a top commentator you get a juicy PR2 back link :) .

  • All things web
Very interesting thing , I never thought about this that much although I noticed that some blogs look ugly in different browsers. Shows how simple things make a big difference.
  • Very interesting indeed and the some are such simple things that anyone can correct , I will post some common mistakes and remedies tomorrow.
  • Woooo..... my blog did not pass the test. It got too many errors.
The validation errors are too technical.
How do we fix if we got those too many errors?
  • Wow, thank you for a very nice write up.

Trying to champion the cause of website accessibility can sometimes be a very lonely task. These days not many people seem to care. People often think of accessibility as meaning that you have to make provision for blind people to use your site. This is part of it but it is definitely not all of it.

Website accessibility means that your site should be accessible to as many people as possible. You have to make provision for all your users, all the different browsers out there as well as all the different technologies.

To me having a website that excludes anyone is not only pointless, it can be considered as being rude. Why bother to get something out in the public eye if you have not made sure that the public as a whole can actually make use of it?

I wish you lots of success in your efforts in trying to get your site to conform to the standards. Your efforts will not only benefit your users but will benefit you as well. Your site will load quicker, you will get more visitors and you will have the gratitude of all those who really need the changes you are busy with. On behalf of all these people I thank you for your hard work.
  • Eric most of your errors seems to be coming because of flash , try the methods shown in the 2 post of the series.
Thanks sailor for the wishes and also giving out this information. It has already helped to make my blog better.
