Blogging/Niche Websites

If you’re planning or building a sustainable long term income then this is probably the best way to go about it. Web hosting and domain names are dirt cheap these days, so almost anyone can launch a website. To be successful at this you need to be a good writer or be awesome at outsourcing content.

I make a living creating websites like these so there’s no reason you can’t do it. I learn the necessary skills like keyword research and search engine optimization via the The Keyword Academy and I highly recommend their course for anyone looking to make a living online.

Affiliate Marketing

In affiliate marketing you get paid for acting as the middle man. For a more detailed explanation please read this TechRadar article. Sometimes a simple image is far better than deep explanation. Below image explains affiliate marketing in a visual manner. For a step by step explanation check out my explanation of affiliate marketing.

What is affiliate marketing

What is affiliate marketing

As you can probably guess the third part is the hard part. Having a blog helps a lot here. In fact I sell product as an affiliate in almost all my blogs. However having a blog is not a necessity in affiliate marketing. You have the option of promoting the link via social media, email lists, Google AdWords and many other methods.

Doing Freelance Work

Strictly speaking freelancing is not an online job. But I’m talking about joining online freelance sites and doing jobs available in them. Popular freelancing sites have a wide variety of jobs inventory. Programming, web design, SEO, data entry and a whole lot more. Don’t just signup and hope for jobs to come to you. Work on your profile, bid for projects and basically hustle till you make it. Check this article to learn more about freelancing in Sri Lanka.

Create Your Own Product/Service

Creating your own product or service is probably the best way to make money online in Sri Lanka. Some good examples include, AutoLanka and Takas. If you’re looking for a product that has gone global, then Creately, the company I work for is a good example.

Now creating your own product or service is no easy task, otherwise everybody would do it. But it is probably the best way to make money online in Sri Lanka. Remember it doesn’t necessarily have to be a products that is craved by millions. A simple e-book or a mobile app is a good way to get going. Entrepreneurship might be in your blood, you’ll never know until you try.

FOREX Trading

As with freelancing, FOREX trading is not something purely online. But I’m talking about online FOREX trading platforms like eToro where almost anyone can signup and try their hand at FOREX trading. I mentioned this last because currency trading is a very risky endeavor that can cost you lots of money. Done right it is very profitable, but keep in mind that around 3% of all traders are profitable. The question is are you competent enough to get into that 3%.

Above five methods basically cover every recommended way you can make money online in Sri Lanka. There are some other not recommended methods and the next section deals with them.

Not Recommended: PTC, PTR and Survey Sites

I mentioned the recommended methods above, but there are other-not recommended-methods to make money online in Sri Lanka as well. They can be generally categorized as PTC, PTR, Survey sites and MLM sites. First a brief explanation of what they mean.

  • PTC – Stands for Paid To Click. You sign up for the website and you get a fix number of advertisements to click everyday and you get paid for each click.
  • PTR – Stands for Paid To Read. You register with them and they send you commercial mails and you get paid a fixed amount when you read them.
  • Survey Sites – Once you register with them you get surveys to fill and get paid for the number of surveys you complete.

It’s possible to make money from these methods but you have to work really hard and you need to refer lots of member to make a decent income. For example most sites pay you $0.001 per click and the minimum payout is $25. To reach the minimum payout without referring others you need to click 25000 ads. Assuming you spend 5 seconds per click that’s 125,000 seconds, 2083 in minutes and almost 35 in hours. I hope you realize it’s just not worth spending time on these.

Problems faced when Trying to Make Money Online in Sri Lanka

For me, the biggest obstacle is that PayPal is send only in Sri Lanka. For those of you who don’t know what PayPal is the biggest online transaction service in the world used by all major online services. Because you cant receive money to PayPal in Sri Lanka you’ll have a hard time receiving money for your services. Major websites support other payment options like Skrill and AlertPay but if you’re doing freelance work for individuals then this can be quite a burden.

Paid To Click or PTC websites are an easy way to earn money online. These websites let you make money without extra effort, require no skills, and are free. All you have to do is click a few ads. I personally earn around US $ 100 from PTC sites.

The best thing about making money online is its passive income. Once you set it up things you have to do to maintain is minimum. If I stopped my online money making activities right now I will still be getting 200$ or more for the new few months doing nothing. I think that is what you want to achieve , not clicking ads everyday , Finally its your decision but I personally feel passive income is the best , although its a bit hard at the start.

Great job Nishadha, Ur postings help a lot for Sri Lnakans like me who are desperately hunting for online income sources. As u very well said Sri Lankans are not getting much opportunities in participating on Paid Surveys. I came across a site who claim to be paid survey providers ti Sri Lankans. This particular site is
Do you have any idea as to whether this is a legitimate site.

I am addressing the guys who commented recently……

This is a good site, and the information is correct. You can make money online in Sri Lanka despite diffculties in accessing the cash. Everything doesnt happen overnight and skill levels matter. However as a low tech guy I am making $200 a month and in another 6 months I know that I will be making $600 a month by continuig my current freelancer work as well as PTC site. After that as this site suggests, I will enter FX trading, hopefully after doing some self study so that I won’t lose my shirt. MY target $1000 a month!

Thank you Nishada for this site, I was encouraged to continue my online journey after seeing this!

Thanks Sugathan for the reply u posted for the quarry I made about srilankanetjobs.

I deem it is part our duties to alert Sri Lankans prevent them from getting fallen onto Scams. But also appreciated that if someone can disclose information about legitimate income sources the are really earning through (not PTC). This should be done with good faith and not for the mere purpose of trying to sell their products (affiliates).

Kindly tell us your (true)success stories dear Sri Lankans, as we can share them for the benefit of everybody.
