The government won the budget by a large margin of 47 ,and as expected claimed this was an approval by the masses to carry out there 10 year plan of rebuilding Sri Lanka. There were many theories about the action the JVP would take , and finally they took the easy way out and didn’t cast their vote. After voting against the budget in the beginning what made JVP not to vote this time is the interesting question. The simple truth is that JVP is trapped withing this government. JVP’s popularity as a party is declining rapidly , as a party representing the working class they have yet to do anything about the rapid increase in the cost of living. They slam the government in public stages but when the time comes to take a stand against the government they meekly surrenders. If the government lost the budget election and went for a general election JVP will most certainly not get 37 seats in the parliament. Knowing this fact and being not sure about how strong the government was JVP decided not to vote ensuring a government victory.
If you only consider the economic factors this budget doesn’t deserve to win. Too much money is spent on the president and the MP’s and very little is utilized to address the growing cost of living. But I have to admit that this government is doing a great job with the war. So even though I’m not a big fan of the economic policies of this government I’m still happy they won. The government is taking lost of loans to cover their expenses , but they must realize that they cant keep asking for aid forever , one day will come when the aid giving countries will stop giving aid until you pay back what you have taken ,Lets hope and pray we can finish this bloody war before that day comes.
