SLIIT – Runners up in Imagine Cup 2008

SLIIT came second best in the recently held Imagine Cup 2008 competition. Team Gagana from SLIIT were runners up while team Sasrutha from UOM were the champs. The theme for this year was Technology for a sustainable environment .More details and the rest of the winners can be found in the official Sri Lankan site for Imagine Cup. According to some the event wasn't a major success but its glad to see SLIIT students consistently performing well in Competitions.

Last Convocation at SLIIT ?

Well hopefully that was my last convocation at SLIIT , Its not because SLIIT is bad or anything , but because studying is something that I don't relish doing.Last year when we got the Curtin degree it was fun with all the guys and gals of our IFS-SLIIT batch around, this year because the ceremony was held in three sessions not all were present at one time so its was not as much fun as the last time. My session was the first one and the chief guest was presidents secretary Mr. Lalith Weeratunga and he gave a nice speech about how the ICT is spreading through the rural areas.According to him ICT literacy was around 9% of the total population in December 2005 and it is around 26% at the moment.Thats a healthy increase of 17% ( Another reason to join online marketing ) in two years.Professor Sam Karunarathna awarded the degrees and the thing was over in two hours. Then the batch photo was taken with half the batch missing . Since I didn't go to lectures much and since I don't know a lot in our batch maybe I shouldn't be complaining a lot, but this is a very important occasion and it would have being nice to have taken with all the guys in our batch present.Below are some photos taken during the day.

No Jobs for SLIIT Students ?

Are SLIIT students not hired for IT jobs ? Are they getting paid less ? There was a big debate about this a while back , And if your a software engineer who has time to browse around the blog sphere you should be aware of this. And when it was dragged up again in the Sri Lankan Programmers yahoo group I thought I should write a post about it giving my opinion.

First thing you have to realize is that SLIIT is a university dedicated to IT and more than 1000 students graduate from SLIIT every year. You cant expect all of them to be top notch programmers. And lets not forget the fact that the students who are going to normal government universities got there because they work hard and have some talent in them. So you'd except them to perform better than the ones who didn't get there. Its just like Royal College producing the best results in A/L etc , well they should produce them since they take the best of the lot after O/L. So its foolish to say that the standards maintained at SLIIT are low by looking at only few students. If the standards are low SLIIT students wouldn't be able to achieve things like Gold and Silver Awards at NBQSA , Gold at APICTA and Gold in Techno 2007. So I think its about time the critics of the SLIIT degree understand the above facts before criticizing.

And a final word about the salary levels given in the forum, The guy who posted cited his sources and they included friends at IFS as well. I work at IFS and I can assure you that no one works there for a salary around 15-20 k as mentioned in the post. He has mentioned many other places and I have to admit I don't know friends in all of them, But the SLIIT guys that I know who works in Virtusa and MIT also get more than 20k as mentioned in the post. So about the salary levels what I can say is that the guy who posted didn't do his research properly.

SLIIT Research Symposium

Year 2007 was a great year for SLIIT as a whole. Project Groups from SLIIT performed exceptionally well in the recently held National Best Quality Software Awards and in the Techno 2007. In NBQSA three projects from SLIIT came to the final six and SLIIT won the gold and the silver awards in tertiary student category. Furthermore the gold medal winning project which represented Sri Lanka in APICTA won the gold medal there as well. In Techno 2007 a third year project won the gold award and they were representing the Data Communication Stream so it was a good all round performance.

Most of these projects were on display at the SLIIT Research Symposium 2007 which was held on 13, December at SLIIT Malabe. Other than the projects there were some stalls from recognized IT companies where students had a chance to submit their CV's. There were some great projects on display and the stalls by the IT companies provided a great opportunity for students to submit their CV's , but the crowd turn up was pretty poor. This could be because of lack of awareness about the event , even among SLIIT students. If you want students to attend something , its not a great idea to held it in the holiday period of SLIIT. If this event was held on lets say around January not only more people will attend , but it will also be a great opportunity for first year students to have a feel of IT. Sri Lanka wins Gold at APICTA

A fourth year project ( Tripwire Project ) done by students of Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology ( SLIIT ) won the gold medal in the recently held Asia Pacific ICT Awards (APICTA) for tertiary student category. It was the only project that won a gold representing Sri Lanka. This is the second year in a row that a Sri Lankan student project won the gold medal in the tertiary student category at APICTA . Last year it was won by Nuwan Senaratna of University of Colombo school of computing for his project on Automatic Music Composition. Every year best projects from different categories are chosen during the National Best Software Quality Software ( NBQSA )Awards held in Sri Lanka. This year the Tripwire Project won the gold at NBQSA and they were chosen to represent Sri Lanka at APICTA. The project that won the silver medal was also from SLIIT and one of the judges who represented the industry was impressed by that one as well and sponsored the silver medal winning team also to go to APICTA. The silver medal winning team came sixth at APICTA. This is a great achievement for SLIIT students for they have shown they have the capability to compete against the very best and come on top. Congratulations to the winners for making Sri Lanka and SLIIT proud.

SLIIT wins another award for best use of Microsoft technologies in NBQSA

I guess when good news comes they tend to come in a heap , If you were following this blog you should know that SLIIT won both the gold and the silver awards for student projects in NBQSA. This alone was a great achievement for SLIIT , But the Tripwire project which won the gold medal won another award for the best use of Microsoft Technologies. If you guys are tired of hearing the good news I'm sorry to disappoint you since theres more good news. The Tripwire project was nominated to represent Sri Lanka in Asia Pacific ICT awards ( APICTA ) to be held in Singapore. Normally BCS - Sri Lanka section only nominates one project to participate in APICTA for a certain category , but one of the judges who were in the panel that decided the winners were also impressed of the project that won the silver medal. So he has come forward to sponsor the silver medal team to go to APICTA, so both teams from SLIIT are going to APICTA. Thats enough of good news for now and lets wish both the groups from SLIIT all the best in APICTA.

SLIIT wins gold and silver medals in NBQSA

Two fourth year projects of Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology ( SLIIT ) has won the gold medal and the silver medal in the National Best Quality Software Awards ( NBQSA ). For the final six three projects from SLIIT were selected along with three from University of Moratuwa (UM). For SLIIT to emerge winners after competing with established universities like is a great achievement. This highlights the fact that SLIIT has come a long way in a short period of time and SLIIT student can held their own against the best. Congratulations to the winners and lets hope SLIIT can keep up the good work.
