Hmm first of all I’m happy to start this conversation. Please this is a sensitive topic so let us all speak about our opinions rather than saying mine correct and yours not.

My answer is somewhat very simple. I don’t know God is there or not. Don’t even care if he looks after us or not(Pretty obvious he is not). I know what is good and bad. So basically if I try to do the good as much as I can.I can be very happy. I most of the time its the the good and bad you do, which will effect you… I told most of the time with a reason.. Any way lets try to do good as much as we can. And avoid being bad.

I would love to as a Q …who do you love most ? God or Mom ?

in my opinion god is inside you…u dnt need to go search for him all over in temples…search for the love inside you..and he reveals him to you…so what that comes up to? love your self and be true to your self and thats the best thing you can do for the god within you..and then everything else falls in place!

Im pretty much with Niro’s answer. I do not know whether an omnipresent all powerful god exists or not (or a pantheon of them for that matter), I have stopped worrying about that.
I think either way humans are responsible for what they do; trying to ‘explain’ things with gods and devil doesnt really work with me.

I mean I’m ok with people saying ‘Its a miracle’. But I’m not ok about waiting for a miracle to happen.

A war definitely can’t be compared to skate boarding, but the fact that you see the similarity on a larger scale is great.

The “Why do bad things happen” is always a tricky question. In my mind, it’s all a question of perspective. I believe that as long as you trust that God (or whatever you believe in) has the bigger picture in sight, everything will be fine in the end…

Your analogy is inappropriate. Where a father leaves a son to make his own mistakes and to learn from the pain, he cares about one individual. He hopes that that one individual will learn as a result of skinning his knee. The son skins his knee, the son learns.

This is entirely inapplicable in the case of starving kids in Africa, or children being born with HIV. Tell me what did the tsunami victims learn? Knowing how to swim is important? Living near the sea is dangerous?

This is bullshit.

Hmm , thats why I said there are some similarities , I guess living your life meaningfully and without a hassle to others is the best way to get close to god. Instead of saying bullshit maybe you can give a better explanation ?

Don’t go to ask why or look at the negatives. Look around you and see the kindness, compassion, and good in mankind and try to see God in those acts. You will feel happier that way. I saw God after the Tsunami, when the outpouring of kindness by Australians saw over $40 million donated for the Tsunami appeal. It was a wonderful feeling to see that side of people in this world where we only hear and see the negatives.
Anyway that is how I think, it’s easier to live that way.

We say we know what is “good” and what is “bad” … but what is it?

God, as explained in the Book of Ecclesiastes in the Christian Bible, actually says that a lot of things on earth don’t make sense.

Why does it rain on the just and the unjust? You guys complain about God’s absence and the presence of death and evil. But you don’t complain about why you get good stuff when you do evil. Think about that.

I agree with Ravana re: the false analogy.

Its easy enough to let a child skin their knee so that they would learn from the experience but would you let your child play with a gun?

In one scenario you end up with a superficial injury, in the other, you end up dead. Even worse, your child could kill someone else.

Slightly different, eh?

We are not questioning the benevolence of god in regard to some idiot who kills or maims himself by jumping of tall building for kicks. If an individual takes risks after being warned of the consequences, you can’t really blame god for the fallout. It’s a completely different picture when someone suffers due to no fault of their own.

It is this question that has led to the catholic principal of ‘original sin’. One of the most disturbing concepts in religion. For those who are unfamiliar with the basic premise; bad things happen to good people because of the original sins committed by Adam and Eve.

What fun!
