A fourth year project ( Tripwire Project ) done by students of Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology ( SLIIT ) won the gold medal in the recently held Asia Pacific ICT Awards (APICTA) for tertiary student category. It was the only project that won a gold representing Sri Lanka. This is the second year in a row that a Sri Lankan student project won the gold medal in the tertiary student category at APICTA . Last year it was won by Nuwan Senaratna of University of Colombo school of computing for his project on Automatic Music Composition. Every year best projects from different categories are chosen during the National Best Software Quality Software ( NBQSA )Awards held in Sri Lanka. This year the Tripwire Project won the gold at NBQSA and they were chosen to represent Sri Lanka at APICTA. The project that won the silver medal was also from SLIIT and one of the judges who represented the industry was impressed by that one as well and sponsored the silver medal winning team also to go to APICTA. The silver medal winning team came sixth at APICTA. This is a great achievement for SLIIT students for they have shown they have the capability to compete against the very best and come on top. Congratulations to the winners for making Sri Lanka and SLIIT proud.

Well done and congrats guys , I don’t know how you did it but you have made Sri Lanka proud. As for the SLIIT degree how can a one teams achivement reflects on the whole institution is beyond me. You guys are still not upto the standards ( well most of you are )

Well done dudes, you made SL and SLIIT proud. But I got 1 question. Not all students is equally good in SLIIT but most of them are. On what basis does Ranidhu says that SLIIT is not upto standards? Then What is your measuring criteria? Who’s giving those standards? well I say its all JEALOUSY.
SLIIT has been established for 7 years now. It has achieved a lot in this short period of time than any other govt or private university. No wonder others are pretty JEALOUS about it.
Yaaa.. yaa… we are way below standards, may be that’s why our guys don’t complain about not having jobs. If you don’t think we are not good enough there’s no need to protest against SLIIT. Anyway well done SLIIT.

If you have been reading the blogs recently (I know that you have been because I have seen your comments in those blogs) there is enough info out there to know that its not just a team. Check the other reports about NBQSA 2007, Techo 2007 its not just one team making all the news.
Please get the facts before making comments.
Congrats guys ( and gals if there are any ) , If I remeber correctly Ranidhu is the prick ( pardon my language ) that insulted the project when they won the Microsoft Award. Some people have huge egos and can’t stand it when someone is doing better than them.
Well Rakitha if you have being reading the blogs as you say it’s no big secret that most in the Industry think that SLIIT degree is not upto the standard. Well as for u guys not complaining about jobs , thats because you guys are content on cheap paying jobs
Well Ranidhu, I have seen those blogs and I have personally replies for some of them.
First thing I want to let you know is that industry does not pay people based on which institute they come from. Most companies that I know including the top companies in this country and the one I work while I am a student has fixed starting salaries for all graduates. You will have a relatively small salary if you are still a student until you complete the degree. And after that the increments as based on performance.
It may be true that SLIIT STUDENTS get low salaries but that’s because they are students. Unlike you people most of us start working full time while we are studying in 2nd or 3rd or 4th years (Few of us start working since year 1). Yes we make smaller salaries compared to graduates until we graduate. But most of us out perform most graduates in the industry once we graduate because industry placement that most of you guys are boasting about simply cant beat that experience.
I know that not good news for people like you who have a reputation to talk trash on SLIIT students and graduates. And in fact it’s the people like you that keep spreading BS like that in the blogs.
So let me remind you the same thing I said in my previous post. Get the facts right before you comment.
I noticed Ranidhu’s posts some time ago. I think it would be best to ignore him, as he doesn’t represent the opinion of all students from government universities. He seems exceptionally immature, so he might not even be a university student at all.
About 3 years ago during and some interview sessions I did notice a mark difference in quality between SLIIT graduates and those from local universities, in that the local university graduates seem to have a better grasp of the practical nature of software.
That said however I now see SLIIT is putting out some very good people. I might even go as far as saying that this year they have outdone all other major government universities in terms of practical coding ability. The multiple awards they’ve won (especially the asia pacific one) is indicative of this. If i’m correct, Moratuwa is yet to prove themselves at Apicta.
Sri Lanka has now won the tertiary category 2 years in a row, hopefully next year Moratuwa can put works where the words are and make us all proud by doing a hatrick at Apicta.
Many congrats for all members of the winning team.Sure you guys must have put so much effort to achieve that goal.Keep up your moral till you climb up to the top of the industry.

Well our national crisis is not the ethnic problem, its called “KUHAKAKAMA”.
Thats biggest issue Sri Lanka is facing and behind all problems in SL.
For the guys/girls who won the APICTA - well done! friends, you just made everybody proud.
